Dhanush Sagar

Dhanush Sagar is a deeply religious sacred pond connected to the pivotal events of the Ramayana. Located south of Janakchowk, west of Ganga Sagar, and east of Ram Mandir, it serves as the largest ceremonial tank in Janakpur city.

According to the epic narrative, during Sita's swayambar, Lord Rama lifted and broke Lord Shiva's divine bow (Pinac) in three pieces. One piece ascended to heaven, the second fell to Patallok (the netherworld), and the third piece struck this location—hence the name Dhanush Sagar, meaning "Ocean of the Bow." The Sanskrit word "Dhanush" refers to the bow, and "Sagar" means ocean or large water body.

Religious beliefs hold that this fragment of the sacred bow is sometimes visible within the pond, appearing to devotees during auspicious times. As per Valmiki Ramayana, a loud blast occurred when the bow broke, scattering small pieces across the land. Some of these pieces fell at this spot and are believed to remain in the form of stone beneath the waters.

According to the legend preserved in Mithila philosophical texts, King Janaka constructed these ponds in preparation for the arrival of gods following the marriage of Lord Rama and Sita. The ponds served both practical and ceremonial purposes for the grand celebrations that followed the divine wedding.

Dhanush Sagar gleams during annual Chhath Puja celebrations, attracting pilgrims who offer prayers and take holy dips in its waters. The pond also witnesses significant activity during Maha Shivaratri, Ram Navami, and especially the Vivah Panchami festival. Small shrines line the perimeter, and vendors sell flowers and ritual objects for puja ceremonies.

The pond offers pilgrims the opportunity for spiritual purification, with many believing that bathing here washes away sins and grants blessings. It is counted among the holiest ponds of Janakpur alongside Ganga Sagar and Parshuram Kund.
